# Soldering Basics

## Overview

Soldering can be intimidating, but it actually can be learned in under 15 minutes!

## Materials

1. Soldering iron
   1. Any will do, but [Weller](https://www.amazon.com/Weller-Digital-Soldering-Station-WE1010NA/dp/B077JDGY1J) is a reliable well known brand
2. Solder
   1. [Kester](https://www.amazon.com/KESTER-SOLDER-32117-24-6040-0027-Diameter/dp/B00068IJPO) is a good brand, but any will be fine
   2. 60-40 tin to lead ratio and 0.8mm for most applications
   3. Don't worry about lead! It's much easier to work with than non-leaded solders. If you're worried, just wash your hands after. I can't be bothered to look it up, but studies say don't worry.
3. [Wire tip cleaner](https://www.amazon.com/Weller-WLACCBSH-02-Soldering-Cleaner-Silicone/dp/B08FQBS97L) - to wipe off excess solder
4. \[Optional] [flux pen](https://www.amazon.com/Solder-Liquid-Soldering-Electrical-Electronics/dp/B0FF793RRY)
   1. Mostly used for reworking sold joints
   2. If you use leaded solder, you won't reach for this often

Check out this video and try it out for yourself! Any guide will do, but this one covers everything you could possibly need to know for soldering eVOLVER.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://khalil-lab.gitbook.io/evolver/guides/soldering-basics.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
