Soldering Basics

Overview

Soldering can be intimidating, but it actually can be learned in under 15 minutes!

Materials

1. Soldering iron

   1. Any will do, but Weller is a reliable well known brand

2. Solder

   1. Kester is a good brand, but any will be fine

   2. 60-40 tin to lead ratio and 0.8mm for most applications

   3. Don't worry about lead! It's much easier to work with than non-leaded solders. If you're worried, just wash your hands after. I can't be bothered to look it up, but studies say don't worry.

3. Wire tip cleaner - to wipe off excess solder

4. [Optional] flux pen

   1. Mostly used for reworking sold joints

   2. If you use leaded solder, you won't reach for this often
